Alternative Process

Students in this class on alternative processes explored the breadth and the potential of the photographic image. Students learned to create camera-less images, make pinhole cameras and pinhole images, and print pinhole and/or digital negatives using cyanotype and Van Dyke Brown emulsions.

Cyanotype and Van Dyke Brown are antique processes that use the sun, or other ultraviolet light source, for exposure. Digital or pinhole negatives are created that are the same size as the intended print. The emulsion is painted on the paper, allowed to dry, then put in the print frame with the negative for exposure. After exposure to the sun, the time for which changes constantly due to the quality of daylight, the print is washed in water.

All of these processes require a sense of play, a willingness to not succeed over and over, an ability to learn from mistakes, and an ability to make connections from one form of visual imagery to another.
